Paulownia’s on Tiniroto Road

Wednesday, 2011 October 19

Today I went to Wairoa, to get some groceries, and to visit the library, of course.
On my way there I came into the little settlement of Marumaru. One of the first houses has some Paulownia trees in the garden (so this are not Jacaranda’s). They are in full flower now.

A little further is a group of trees alongside the road. Here I took some pictures on my way back.

At first I thought this were Jacaranda’s (what do I know about trees?) Wilma had her doubts already. But Ann Holden pointed out that these trees definitely are not Jacaranda’s, but Paulownia‘s.
She writes:
The flowers of Pauwlonias are paler than Jacaranda, and Jacarandas dont flower till mid summer. Also the leaves are quite different, Jac… loses its leaves in spring and is dormant until it flowers, the leaves are quite lacey/fernlike, whereas Pau… are slightly furry, you will see what I mean when Ja… flower. I think there are some on the long straight bit of road between genle Annie and the roundabout.
Thanks, Ann, for this comment!
